1992 Mariner 150hp V6 SN#OD124111

Read a post somewhere about how to test a voltage regulator by disconnecting the wires putting a voltmeter on the wires and doing a test. Been to the search page but cant locate it. Anyone know the post or the procedure?

Re: voltage spike

The simple way to test the system is to connect a voltmeter to the battery start the engine and you can see the battery voltage increase

Re: voltage spike

The procedure you describe will toast the VR if the motor happens to be running at the time. Voltmeter on the bat is usually sufficient, although one of two could still be bad and the other still work. (you have 2 regulators)

Re: voltage spike

Can I disconnect one of the regulators, crank the engine and measure across the battery with a volt meter to see if one of the regulators is working? Will running this engine with one voltage regulator cause any damage?
