1992 Mariner 150hp V6 Ser#: OD124111

Cruising along at 5000rpm the voltage gage will jump from 14 volts to 17 volts. It stays there a while then drops to 14 volts. Any ideas what would cause this? Just got this motor and it runs well except for this.

Re: voltage

Hi,
Probably rectifiers, 2 of them. Easy to check. Do not run until fixed can dammage other stuff. First make sure all battery connections are clean & tight, tighten with pliers. Hope this helps. G

Re: voltage

Pops the caps of your battery and make sure the plates aren't exposed. If they are fill with distilled water.

Re: voltage

On The Hill,

I am having the same problem with a 1994 200hp Mariner. My motor has two regulators. If yours has two you might try this. I was told I could disconnect one and run it and see if the problem stopped. If not reconnect that one and disconnect the other and rerun. This should tell which one is bad. I also had a person reply that he had a bad battery cause the same problem. First start with the easy stuff. Have your batteries tested and check all connections are clean and tight.

ED

On the Hill,

If you find your problem please give a post. I have regulators on order and won't get to it for a week.I will do the same.

ED

Re: voltage

On the Hill,
Just got back from working on my boat. Mine was doing the same thing occasionally going up to 17 volts. Bought two regulators. When I pulled the old ones I found one had two yellow wires melted at the connectors and it appeared they were touching intermittantly. I went ahead and changed both regulators and ran the wires a little differently so they dont rub together. All appears good.

ED

Re: voltage

Thanks for all the replies, lots of good info. I changed batteries and problem still occured. I am going to look for bad wires and hope for the best. If the rectifiers need replacing is there a way to test them to find out which one is bad? About what do they cost?

Re: voltage

Wrenchman,
I recommend you get the Maintenance manual for your motor. Alot of these motors are different. Some have rectifiers and regulators, some have a combination rectifier/regulator. If you have a high voltage problem you are probably look towards your "regulators" and not your "rectifiers". My book also mentioned a bad "stator" can cause this problem. I would think the regulators would be more likely. The bad news is the regulators can be expensive. Mine started out at $140.00 each and I needed two. Found them on line for $108.00.

Re: voltage

Hello.
Ran the boat today on a battery I charged last night for 6-hours. Still today I had the voltage spikes from 12 to 17 volts. Got home and checked for bad wires and noticed that one of my rectifiers has all kinds of brown goo coming out of it. I suspect this is the problem. Can I disconnect it and run with one rectifier untill I get a replacement and where online can I get one?

Re: voltage

Wrenchman,
I was told you could disconnect the two yellow wires from one regulator at a time and run it to isolate which regulator was bad. I read in my manual that the reason they went to two regulators was to handle the heat better as each one would have 1/2 the current going through it. I don't think I would run it with one regulator for an extended amount of time, it might damage it, but I don't know for sure.
I got my regulators, which turned out to be CDI brand, which a lot of people have vouched for, from Nick's Marine. WWW.nicksoutboardmarine.com
You can look at their parts online but you have to call in an order. 859-854-3888. They did me well and took about 5 days.

ED
