I'm shopping boats and found most with the standard Mercruiser setup, but one has a Volvo Penta 5.0 engine. The year is 96 and it has a Volvo Penta SX Cobra Outdrive.

Anyone know if this engine is a decent engine, or problematic? From what I can tell it is the 302 5.0L Mustang engine with the multi-port electronic fuel injection.

Did these engines do well in their day? Are the parts still available for them and are they still supported? Should I consider it or stay away?

Any info appreciated.

Very probablematic if you go looking for parts.
Fords were not used after 1996, you can't even find spark plug wires for them. Finding someone to work on them is another chore. Most Volvo dealers never bought all the special tools for the Fords.

I have this motor. It has been a very reliable motor. Its true about the plug wires and finding knowledgeable mechanics. Just about everything else is pretty easy to get. It does seem like the GM power plants are way more abundant. Even still, I wouldn't hesitate to buyt another one.
