i will be helping a friend replace the drive u-joint. he has both seloc and clymer manuals. books cover removal of the upper gear box to replace the joint. then it occured to me that these outdrives disappear off boats overnight. is it possible to pull the whole outdrive to replace the joint ? pulling the upper gear box looks like it could get real involved. anyone done this ? thanks fred

If you have the manual its easy. The hardest thing will be getting the old spiders off.Do not unhook the bellows on the engine side, dont unhook the water hose at all you do not have to for this proceedure this will save you time.REPLACE THE ORINGS AND SEAL THE SURFACES LIKE THE BOOK SAYS.It is only an extra $8.00. Only 13 steps and your ready to put back together.I am a left arm amputee and did it in a parking lot in the pouring rain with my 8yr old son. good luck

Damn fish393....Go Ahead! Doesn't sound like the loss of an arm has slowed you down much! Now that's getting her done!

thankyou for your response. we will be doing this over water on a boat lift, and the seloc manual made it sound like a major tear down. was afraid of parts flying all over. clymer manual makes thing look much simplier. regards fred

Don't forget the shims, unless you have a problem with the bearing preload, put the shims back exactly as they came out otherwise you've got a lenghy process to re-shim correctly, especially with the boat in the water.

Aldo
