I have a 86 Volvo penta 2.3 inline 4, idles good and can rev engine ok, as soon as I engage it dies out before I can even rev enough to move the boat. What could be causing this??? As I said it will idle and run fine out of water but dies under load. Thanks in advance for the help.

Make sure the shift cutout switch (if you have one) is rigged properly. Make sure the idle speed is high enough (start with 850 at least, you can slow it down later if you like) and make sure the idle mixture is rich enough.

Re: volvo 2.3 DIES under load..please help!

I dont have a shift cutout switch. I did increase the idle, didnt help also messed with the air/fuel adjustment. still have same problem...I did get a new set of points and a rebuild kit for the Solex carb seems to be running stronger now but dont know how it will act once in water! I guess I will soon find out. When I did rebuild the carb it all was pretty clean, nothing noticable, the points were pitted. would this cause a big enough lack of power (under load) that it just dies out?? Curious

Re: volvo 2.3 DIES under load..please help!

i am working on one right now that dies under load then when it cools off starts again and runs for short time .... i went thru and checked the whole fuel system and i dont believe its fuel related so i am in the process of installing a ignitor solid state ignition module in distributor and a new coil for this system ... i read on some post about coil problems so i am going to try this .... the boat has an aq131a with a 275 outdrive i will let you know in a few days if this works
