I'm in the process of painting my 270 outdrive and I have these stainless steel parts that almost all the old paint has flaked off of. They are part of the reverse latching mechanism and one piece is part of the shifter linkage.
My question is do I need to paint these? I know stainless steel is pretty durable. They seem really complex to paint so I think I may just blast them with walnut shell to remove the rest of the old paint and call them good. But I'd also hate to get it all together to find out that they're causing problems without paint.
The one thing that's throwing me off is that they seem to have been painted from the factory, although not very well.
Paint or not to paint?

Oh and these will be in saltwater.
