Volvo 270 out drive info

Hi just wondering is any one can tell me a 270 Volvo outdrive is
ok to run a small v8 engine on .
I am doing up a Bertram 20 and have now decided to stay with the i/0
setup . So I am just trying to work out the motor option

Sure, those drives were also used with diesels. They are plenty strong enough, but you do have to have the proper gear ratio for the engine. You don't want a drive for a 4 cylinder behind a V8. You need a 1.61:1 gear ratio for a 350.

Hi don s thankyou for your info if I was going down the diesel engine path what would be the best option and gear ratio .
This leg had volvo penta 4 cylinder on it I think as boat didn't have motor
when I bought it

Have no clue what that means, Volvo doesn't write that on any of their drives.
and who knows what Bertram put in a 20' boat of whatever year you have.
Pictures would be nice, because we have no idea what you are looking at, and the info you have posted tells us nothing.
