volvo 270 outdrive tilt question?

My older volvo outdrive tilt pump (1960's) had no problem in setting the drive down in the water. And the guy I bought it from said it would go up, but only with a little help. (At least he was honest) ...So upon advise of a friend I took the pump motor off and dropped it off at my local generator /starter repair shop. The business owner knew all about these motors and said it would be done in two days.
When I pulled off the motor the fluid/ lubricant seemed kinda dark.
....so when I reinstall it, is there any other issues, maintenance, fluids or inspections that I need to be aware of to prevent any damage to the unit?
Does anyone have a manual for me to keep for instruction or reference?

Thanks

Re: volvo 270 outdrive tilt question?

the "fluid" is old broken down bearing grease. I would pull the assembly out, disassemble, clean, reseal, regrease, reassemble.

Or, an easier method but less complete, would be to just pull the top cover off the mechanism, clean and fill with new grease and reinstall the cover.

After reinstalling you need to run the lift up and down to bleed out the excess grease out the top hole of the cover or it will interfere with the limit switch on the top of the assembly.

use caution running without the limit switch as you could damage the assembly.

Got the motor back, rebuilt from the generator / starter shop. $92.00. I think that was cheap. Now to pump itself.
