I was told by my marina that the steering yoke on one of my outdrives has stripped splines. Since this is an older boat can the control arm and the yoke be welded, drilled and pinned or any other suggestion so I dont have to remove the drive to replace yoke and arm. Does anybody know what metals are used in these parts, as the boat is 200 miles away from town.

Thanks

AL

Re: Volvo 270 steering

If that drive turns so hard that it stripped the splines on the steering yoke, then it needs to be fixed before you can't steer it at all.
The problem is corrosion, it builds up between the plastic steering bushings and the transom shild which causes the bushings to squeeze the yoke. With power steering you can overpower a lot, but when it starts stipping spines, it's time to get it fixed before you can't steer and run into someone else.
