I Just bought a 1966 Barrel back Donzi with a 351C and 270T The guy said that the tilt does not work and thought that the lower was bad ? I ran the motor on land and the lower unit shook and rattled, it went away when I manually lowered the unit. also it is leaking Hydraulic fluid So I will have to rebuild the cylinders .
I belive that it is a 1970 to 1972 270T volvo outdrive.

Re: Volvo 270T trim problems

Welcome to iboats barrelback, I moved this over to it's own thread since it had nothing to do with the thread you posted it on originally.

First thing to do is drain the gear lube out of the drive and see what's in the oil.

Next, NEVER run with the engine full up, you may have damaged the ujoints, bellows, or the flywheel housing. You may want to remove the upper gear box and look inside the bellows to see what happened, if anything.

Thanks Don S for moving my thread . first time on I did check the oil and it was clear and clean .I ran the motor for a short time [ hope no damage ] I removed the lower unit to inspect the gimble bearing it all looks to be tight and new I since found a 270T n/o stock lower unit complete never used and are plaining to use this lower unit but thinking of replacing the gimble bearing to be safe the question is do i need to remove the motor???? The history of this boat was that it was rebuilt and gone over but the guy I brought it from should have never owned a boat had no idea what he was doing !claims he used it once.

Re: Volvo 270T trim problems

First of all, you don't have a gimbal bearing. Your bearing/s are called Primary Driveshaft bearings and are located in the flywheel cover housing.
Next problem is the Ford engines weren't even used in 70 to 72, and only used with the 280 drives in 76-78. That was the end of Ford until 94.
Anyway, assuming it's a transplant and used what was used on the Fords in 76-78, yes you would have to pull the engine to replace the bearings. There are two of them.

This may help you understand why the engine needs to come out.
