Ok so I hate to post this but I have searched and searched and have found nothing to help me. I have a brand new volvo 275A outdrive that I picked up to replace my old 270. When I tilt the motor all the way down the drive hits the bar. However, it does not latch the prawl. For the prawl to grab I have to manually pull the drive up about a quarter inch and take the slack out in order to for the latch to grab the bar. Now I understand that it is not supposed to latch in forward however it does not change at all weather It is in forward, neutral or reverse it always locks and when it is all the way down there is slack. The major problem is that the latch is semi depressed when it is all the way down which does not allow my actuator to be exposed for proper contact with the tilt mechanism. It ONLY is exposed when I pull the drive up slightly and take the slack out. My old outdrive worked just fine and I cannot see any difference between the two systems. I know I may not be explaining myself properly. I will try and get some pics tomorrow. I am going nuts trying to figure this out. I also cant see how when shifting to reverse how that entire system locks the drive. All it does is push the collar down and the latch appears to work the same way as it would in any other position. This is driving me nuts, I need a beer.

You sound like everyone else who has tried to get their head around the reverse lock mechanism.

IMO, your's is working fine. As long as it doesn't kick up in reverse, and releases when you tilt the drive up, you're good to go.

Make sure you have a tow bracket supporting the drive when towing.

Haha I know and I have been going nuts over this. The problem is that is does not hit the actuator when all the way down, you have to pull on the drive slightly to expose the actuator. So should I just adjust the actuator? The only problem is if I do that the actuator will be exposed about a inch when not in the fully down position.

Below is some information on adjusting the mechanism. Maybe it will help you understand how it works.
In the upper right picture, make sure the sleeve marked B in the picture is not damaged and adjusted properly. Also check link #6 in the same picture. If it's missing or the linkage is adjusted wrong, it will prevent it from unlocking in fwd.

Pulled the drive and adjusted ed the actuator up about 3/8". It will now trim up etc when fully down. I suck, was over thinking the entire setup. I am going to put it in the water tomorrow, will let you know how it works in the water.
