Volvo 275A Questions

I've got a Volvo AQ131d with the 275A sterndrive. Just picked this boat up a few weeks ago, and have had to do some work to the motor. Got the engine running good, but have discovered a few problems with the leg:

1. U-Joint Bellows Cracked.
2. Milky sterndrive oil (just changed the oil when I bought the boat, took it out twice, got all milky.) I assume this is possibly due to the bellows being cracked.
3. Steering Fork is cracked right in front of the water intake.

So I've bought a seal kit, new bellows, a new steering fork, and new u-joints. I've got a few questions tho...

Any tips on getting the pivot pins out? Its super frustrating getting them out with them being flat-head screws.

How much play should be present on the shaft coming out of the bell housing? I can wiggle the spline about an 1/8th inch up and down, virtually no play side to side. Is the gimbal bad?

How do you drive the water tube guide sleeve out of the steering fork to remove the intermediate assembly? My Clymer book shows a special tool needed (which is available for $79).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Volvo 275A Questions

First thing you do is get rid of the Clymers manual. Download the OEM manual here.

In Volvo terminology, they are intermediate bearings. Nothing in the bearings gimbal or move. The are regular ball bearings. If the move up and down at all, they are JUNK and must be replaced before you destroy the engine bellhousing (where those bearings are located)
You Must remove the engine.

And yes you need the special tool to remove that tube. IF you damage the tube, it costs more than the tools, and it is in there pretty tight.
PS: LIST price on that tube is $485.
