You need to pull the transmission apart to change the u-joints. I highly suggest you download a factory manual, or find a Volvo tech

Oh Ya X2

The u-joints should have slid off with the drive. At this point, you should be able to just grab them and slide them off.
Looking at the picture of your input shaft bearings, it looks like this drive might have been run with no or too little lube. If so you might be needing a complete drive.
At the very least a complete teardown and inspection.

That is a mess!
You should check your PDS bearings also.
The drive you need will have a Gear Ratio of 1:61.1
The lower unit determines the gear ratio
The transmission will interchange from a AQ270 up to a 290-A
If you take the lower unit apart to inspect and all is good with it you only need a different transmission. Around $400 give or take.
There are a few complete units on EBay for around 1K
Here is a manual www.mybayliner.co.uk/boatmad/280285290.pdf

PDS Bearings hold the shaft between the engine and U-Joints
Here is a pic that is similar to your setup..
#65 is a Primary Drive Shaft and supported by 2 bearings. Be sure they are nice and smooth and well greased.
If you buy a Transmission off EBay you also need to shim it to your mid section. Read the manual and it will walk you through it.

Ya I read about shims said to pay action to how many except there were none.I'll read up on that.so the bottom and mid all look good surprising but they look real good except who ever had done work to this drive really did not care as there was like tons of silicone between the bottom and intermediate housing. I've cleaned them up.I'll buy the top Trans on ebay saw this one looks like new with new jointshttp://m.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-penta-Outdrive-Upper-Gear-Unit-Box-SP-DP-A-B-C-D-V6-V8-4-270-275-280-290-/152202207990?nav=SEARCH

Will that one work for mine as you said the bottom is fine?I wonna replace all barring while I have it down.if there a list of parts I need you can let me know...aND should I order barring gaskets ect.i from here or any good place I might look.I also wonna take time and really thank you and everyone's help on iboats forum and iboats I could not have got this far without you guys thank you so much got well over 20k in this boat but after this she be a great ocean boat thank you all so much
