I have a 1987 290 drive with a 151b engine I would like to replace the u joints, gimbal bearing and any other items that should be replaced while this is apart. The big question is can I do this by just removing the upper gear case, our do I have to pull the outdrive to remove the upper case to get to the u joints and drive bellows and other items I should replace while the outdrive is apart. I would appreciate a list of the items I should replace while I have the outdrive apart, and any other suggestions about doing this job. I am not a mechanic by any means but I have done the auto hot rod scene for years doing engine and trans repairs and changes and the other maintenance items that came up.

thanks for your help

You only need to remove the upper gear box to do these repairs. You should have the single bearing flywheel housing so that can be done without removing the engine.

Heres how to remove the upper.

You'll need new seals for the flywheel bearing for sure, the new bearing, two orings under the upper gear box, new seals for the drain and fill holes for the outdrive lube...Personally, I would take it apart first to make sure what you need instead of trying to guess ahead of time. Oh, and a new ujoint bellows. While in there I would replace the water intake and gasket under the upper gear box as well.

If you have trouble identifying or finding any of these parts, just ask.:)
