I have a bad pinion gear and need to replace it. I suspect it has probably damaged the drive gears for both props now. I haven't pulled it down yet as I am trying to get my ducks and parts in a row. I have another complete lower gear case that has a broken drive shaft (broken at turned spot as it should be) appears to be in good condition otherwise. So my plan is to pull apart the unit with a broken driveshaft (volvo likes the name countershaft) and replace the shaft, reassemble and put the complete unit on my existing drive, thereby replacing the gearcase with the bad pinion. As the shaft is broken pretty much flush with gearcase (of course) my plan is to heli-arc a nut to the shaft so I can hold it, to get the pinion gear nut off. I have not broken down a volvo gear case before and would appreciate any advise or tips or watch-outs that you may have. One question I have, is the pinion nut a convetional right hand thread? Also any tips on the special tool needed for reaching the nut. I'm thinking it's a little hard to reach.. Perhaps I'm overthinking. Also I am hoping that by just replacing the shaft and using all the same gears and parts that are in place that I might not have to do all the gears lash set up again? or am I just wishing with my open hand??? Thanks
