Volvo 3.0 SX knock in drive

Hi I've got a 1999 3.0 SX Drive engine and I am getting a knock or a rattle when I am in gear. I don't get it when I am in neutral but only when in gear so I am thinking it is in my bottom end? Any ideas?

does it get worse in gear when you steer fully port or stbd?

Drain the gear lube and check for metal, and pull the drive and check the ujoints and gimbal bearing, and see if there is water in the bellows.

No it doesn't make a difference.

I was thinking I would have to do that. Had the knock start about a week before I changed the oil (hit a rock and damaged the skeg so had it off to repair it). I thought the knock was from the engine misfiring at first. I didn't notice anything then but the oil should still be nice and clear. I will check the u joints and bellows and will post what i find.
