Volvo 4.3 GXi-B stalls seconds after first start

During the first start of each day, the engine RPM will slowly go down and stall or it will almost stall and then RPM will surge up to 2000 RPM or higher and eventually settle down to idle speed. Once out on the water, starting and idling is not a problem. 2002 Four Winns 180 Horizon Volvo 4.3 GXi-B.

Your engine is cold. RPM's fluctuate a little on the first start on a cold engine. If it runs perfect when its at normal operating temp and your only problem is you have to turn your key a second time. Consider yourself lucky. Don't worry about it. Go boating...

My engine is port fuel injected, therefore has no choke. I have a friend with the same engine and his starts like a fuel injected car. Thanks anyway.

I Never mentioned a choke.

Start with the basics.

When was the last tune up? Your spark plugs maybe getting old.

Check your fuel filters...

My apologizes, I don't now where i got the choke comment from. The boat is a 2002 and it looks like the spark plugs are original. I have new ones, but haven't changed them yet. The fuel filter was done last fall. I will install the new plugs and gap them for 0.060. Thanks for your help.

And not all that uncommon, especially if you have a battery switch and turn it off every night. Wipes the computers memory.

I do shut the battery switch off when I am away for the week, but I could be at the boat for a week or more, never turn the switch off and I still have the stalling condition. Thanks for the feedback.

Do you have any advice on where I can go to better understand all this Forum terminology?ie. Subscribed threads, posts, etc. This is my first time participating in a Forum. I contacted iboats by phone, but the link they sent me was not helpful at all.
