I have a corrosion issue on my SX-M sterndrive. Most of the corrosion is on the sterndrive but to do the job right I need to remove everything including the transom plate. That would enable me to prep and paint the areas that are not accessable when assembled on the boat. I have an excellent workshop and will replace the bellows, gimbal bearing, seals etc. None of that appears to be bad but it's smart to replace when it's all apart. Before I do the job, I will buy an alignment tool. I have a factory manual but wanted to hear from people who have removed everything down to the transom. Are there any special things to consider, does the engine have to be removed etc? For someone who has never done the job, about how long could I expect the job to take (lots of automotive experience). The manual obviously describes how to do it, but there no replacement for advice from someone who has done the job. Last question, are standard catalyzed automotive paints and epoxy primers the material of choice? I have a paint booth for painting cars and I'm familiar with metal prep/etching including aluminum, but only for cars. Is the technology the same? Thanks for the help.
