Volvo 4.3GL bogging and hesitates

I'll start with saying that I don't post a lot on here since I can usually solve my problems simply by browsing the forums.
Problem is with a 4.3GL PLK model with the SX Cobra drive. Trying to track down my bogging issue. I am a mechanic, very particular about my work and absolutely hate just throwing parts at engines without diagnosing things first. Bought the boat as a salvage due to overheating, installed new heads, reassembled engine and ran it on a test stand. Ran good until the accelerator pump stopped squirting.Found the accelerator pump was full of rust that was plugging the passage to the squirter. Rebuilt the Holley 2bbl and dropped the engine in the boat. Starts up excellent, set the timing on the Delco est distributor and and everything seemed ok....until i started playing with the throttle. It hesitates (bogs) with fast action of the throttle with no backfire, acting as if the accelerator pump is not working. Seems to be spraying a good stream of gas into the carb, but I decided to pull it back apart in case there may still be some crud in the passages. Cleaned it extra good again and even replaced the check valve and diaphragm as they are inexpensive and I had some extras. Put everything back together....same thing...starts right up, idles great and even revs nicely if you ease on the throttle, but as soon as you give it fast throttle it bogs! I checked, double checked and triple checked the timing and noticed when i take the B+ jumper wire off the timing jumps to about 20 degrees and stays right around that setting all throughout the rpm range. I am not super with the Delco est advance curve, but could possibly a faulty advance system on my distributor be causing my hesitation/bogging?? Anybody who has some input on this issue would be extremely helpful.

Hesitates/bogs on throttle is a symptom of a clogged fuel filter or restricted fuel line/anti-siphon valve. You may also want to double check your firing order just in case.

I'm thinking I can rule out any type of fuel starvation to the carb. Drained the gas tank last weekend due to the dark yellow gas and installed a new filter/water separator and blew out the lines to and from the electric fuel pump. Also pulled the bowl off the holley carb and cleaned the bad gas out of it. The system now has 30 gallons of premium ethanol free gasoline in it.

As for the firing order, I'll triple check this afternoon, but I've been through everything multiple times. There is no audible misfire, it idles very smooth, no backfire.

What is the procedure for testing the pick up coil? This is my first experience with a volvo using the delco est distributor.

On the rebuild of the carb, did you use the replace power valve with original spec ?

Great info! I will do some testing as soon as I get home this afternoon. Will definitely test the ignition coil as well.
Purchased the boat from an older couple who left it on a hoist most of the summer and seldom used it. He said he kept it double covered (factory snap on plus a gray airtight cover) and could tell it was a victim of lots of condensation build up over the last 15 years he owned it so I wouldn't rule out corrosion being an issue with most of my current problems.

New dist cap and rotor may help, contacts could be corroded some and material coming off and making tracks inside to where there could be some crossfire stealing the spark from the firing cylinders.

Yes, it was an exact factory replacement on the power valve. The kit was specifically for the model carb I had.

As was the cap, rotor, plugs and wires replaced when I did the heads because of the corrosion I found on the terminals inside of the cap as I reassembled the engine.

In order to test these ignition coils you will need a multimeter with thin sharp probes as regular probes won't fit inside the connector. They rarely go bad but if they do go OEM or high quality with delco est.

Yes, I agree. I only use quality oem or better grade parts. Learned my lesson a long time ago on budget imports...especially electronics.

And not sure of the power valve off hand.

Thanks guys for the help. After some testing swapped out the ignition module with another delco distributor I had on my shelf and back in business. Now I can take it out and test on the water this weekend!
