Volvo 4.3GL PLKD low compression on 1 cylinder after hydrolock...what to do?

Hello. Great forum here...tons of good information...long time reader first time poster.

I have a 1997 Regal Destiny 200 20' center console boat powered by a Volvo 4.3GL PLKD with 450 hours. At the end of May I took some family out fishing on the grass flats in the Gulf of Mexico. While cruising the flats the engine overheated. I shifted to neutral and turned the key to off but the boat dieseled for about 30-45 seconds before finally dying. Waiting for engine to cool and tried to start but started would just spin...would not engage flywheel. Called Seatow and got pulled in. At that time my mother (who had moved in with us some years before) was dying of liver cancer and I was her full-time caregiver till she passed June 29th. Now some 3 months later I'm starting to feel like I want to get back to life again and realized I had never followed up with the boat. So last week I replaced the impeller. The old one was missing all the fins and looked like it had sucked up a bunch of sand. hooked up the muffs and tried to start. No go. Spins but won't engage flywheel. Installed new starter and it turned over ever so slightly before the starter quickly began to over heat and smoke. I let starter cool and pulled all the plugs and cranked various amounts of water out of the cylinders. Checked oil on dipstick and oil level is good, no water, and oil is still clean/amber (I had changed the oil/filter before last trip) dried, cleaned, and reinstalled plugs. Engine fired up and ran rough for a bit before smoothing out somewhat but still not running smooth at idle and I notice some steam/exhaust coming out the breather tubes. After a bit the steam dissipates and looks like small puffs of exhaust. So I shut her down and next morning did a compression test and these are the readings: cylinder #1-175, #2-180, #3-95, #4-175, #5-175, #6-175. So...looks like cylinder #3 has some damage or perhaps a bad valve? What should I do from here? Any thoughts appreciated!

(Disclaimer - I'm not a professional, I just have my own opinions) Looks like a valve. Some old-timers may say to replace one quart of oil in your engine with some marvel mystery oil and run your engine for awhile. It may clear up. another way would be to take your valve cover off and tap your valves with a rubber mallet and see if one is stuck. if it is, you can keep tapping it and loosen it up. If it is very stuck, I have heard of people taking cotton cord and stuffing it in the cylinder through the spark plug hole so that the cylinder is protected from the valve when trying loosen up valve by taking the rocker and spring off of the valve, connecting a drill to the stem and spinning the valve while working it up and down while spraying a lubricant on the valve. you may want to do your own research if you tried something like that. I'm pretty sure that there will be plenty of people on here that will advise against you doing that. there are other ways that you can get the valves unstuck but would require you to remove the cylinder head. So, if you have plenty of money take it to a professional.

If you got water out of the cylinders I would be inclined to suspect that No.3 bore has rusted or that the piston rings have rusted into the pistons. I would suggest you pour some oil in that bore and re-check the compression, if it improves considerably then it is not a valve. You might like to leave some Marvel Mystery oil soaking in the bore for a few days then try running the engine again having first exhausted the excess oil via the spark plug hole.

Marvel Mystery Oil. I love it!!
Others HATE it.

Pour some in ALL the cylinders.
Remove the valve covers.
Slowly turn it over just a bit to make sure the valves are operating and make sure the MMO coats everything.
Then let it set.

Then after 24-48hrs.
Get it started.
Gonna smoke like crazy but run it.
Then put it in the water and go for a ride.

Do another comp test.
Still low?

Pull the head and inspect the valves.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try the oil in the cylinder and see what happens. Hopefully I'll get lucky!

The Marvel oil seems to have worked! I poured about an ounce of of it in the #3 cylinder and let soak for 48 hours. Started the boat and let it run for about 1/2 hour on the muffs (no time to launch her that day) and then after she cooled re-checked compression and it's up from 95 to 165. I'll be taking her out soon for a test run. I think I might have dodged a bullet here! Thanks for the suggestions!

Glad the MMO worked.
Just keep an eye on it.
That motor came with flappers in the down tubes.
They were supposed to keep the water from coming back up the tubes.

Since you overheated they might have melted and fell down the tube(maybe that's where the fraise "down the tubes" comes from???

Pull the manifolds and see if they are there.
If not then they need to be taken out of the Y pipe.
They can cause a restriction and an overheat??

The later years they stopped using them but if it was mine I'd replace.
