Volvo 5.7 GSi Stopped Runniing

I had the boat idling on the shoreline and suddenly when I put it in reverse it quit running. I can hear the fuel pump build up pressure but it won't start. When turning the ignition on I get the two long beeps as normal but it will not start. Then while trying to start it I hear the three, four-series, beeps I normally hear when I turn the ignition off. However, the starter is still turning and the ignition switch is in the start position. I have no idea where to start.

Re: Volvo 5.7 GSi Stopped Runniing

Is this an EFI or carb, I'm guessing EFI? Most of the new engines new scanners to determine issues.
That said, what have you done or had done this season?
The fuel pump turns on for 3 seconds when the key is first turned on but does not necessarly buld pressure in the system. This timing comes from the ECM. Once the engine starts to crank the ECM will see if the distributor signals it is suppling spark and then the ECM pulses the injectors. If no spark is sensed then the injectors are not pulsed.
Is there fuel in the fuel filter?

Thank you for the reply. It is TBI. I have been down with a bad back but am better now. Unfortunately I cannot lift up the back seat to gain easy access to the fuel filter but will give it my best to do a visual tomorrow. If there isn't fuel in the filter then I think that's pretty good sign of needing a new pump. But, what would be the next step if filter is full. Also, interesting was the fact of getting the shutdown beeps while still trying to start it after running the starter for 10-15 seconds. The same sounds I get when I turn it off.

I'm not a Volvo expert, just been around many for years. I'm more at home with Mercs.
If the filter is full then need to check and see what is the fuel pressure from the pump. There should be a fitting (sharder type) which can be depressed to measure pressure. Don't buy a pump unless you know it is not delivering the required pressure (30 to 60 psi). It could be you have a clogged fuel filter, when was it changed last? The newer engines usually needs a scanner to figure out what is going on with them. I bought one for my Merc's because I ran into simular issues. Sometimes there are no other ways. Like any engine, they need fuel, air and spark. If you think you have fuel pull a plug wire and see if you have spark

Thanks, yes I will do all those checks. It was last tuned up and worked on back in April. I blew a head gasket so I had them pull both heads; no cracks; had them mill them down. It's run great all year until this happened. All filters were changed in April as well. Yeah, I thought about the analyzer but if it's something beyond my capabilities I would still have to take it in... I will keep this thread posted.

Well, the issue is solved and I'm not sure I would have found this. I took it to the shop that serviced it the beginning of the season. They discovered that the fuel filter bowl retainer had worked it's way loose. Even though there was fuel in the bowl, it being loose permitted the system to suck air in thereby depriving the engine of fuel. Wow. Since is was not sufficiently tightened when they changed the filter it vibrated loose just enough. Being the good shop they are, they stood behind their work - no charge. Something learned every day.
Thanks for the support and perhaps this will help someone in the future.
