I have a volvo penta 5.7 gxi 2008 and have started hearing a clicking sound from the engine when i hit 1000 rpm. At first i thought that it was a valve that needed adjusting but upon closer look it appears to be coming from the automatic tensioner. As the rpm increase so does the sound. There is only 82 hours on the engine. Is this something that needs adjusting or could it be bad already? Thanks

That is what I was thinking but am wondering how that could go bad so fast with so little hours on the engine

Re: volvo 5.7 gxi clicking from auto tensioner

Yeah I understand that, but it seems like a lot is going wrong with a pretty new engine. Last October I had to have the trim pump replaced which was covered under warranty, then 6 month later ( out of warranty) I have the starter needing to be replaced, trim pump hose that has a leak which requires all 4 hoses to be replaced plus the pump again because water got inside, and now the tensioner. The boat is kept in the water so each time I have to pay for the haul out, storage while parts are being ordered, and mechanic travel to the boat. For a new boat with only 80 hours this seems a little crazy. It seems like every year I pay over $1000 for repairs on a brand new engine. The engine on my sail boat is 30 years old and all i ve replaced is a water pump, impellers, and hoses! Is there any way I can get an extended warranty from volvo at this point, or any kind of recourse? The original warranty was up in March, and I was never offered an extended warranty at purchase? On their website I can not find a customer service number to call, just an address to send a letter. The dealer where i purchased the boat is too far to take it when it breaks down so i have been using a volvo penta auth repair co. and they say they cant help. BTW is this bearing an easy fix? can the bearing just be replaced or am I looking at a whole new tensioner and how much does that usually cost? Sorry for the long post but am at my witts end. Have been a boat owner 30 years and never had this many issues before. Thanks Joe

Can you post the serial number for your engine? Year doesn't help.

the serial # of the engine is 4012226841. When I purchased the boat in March 2008 the boat was never registered with volvo, which I found out in August 2009 when I had the first problem with the trim pump. When they did the repair the volvo service people registered the warranty so I thought that ment it would be active for 2 years from August 2009 but when I started having these problems now they said they checked and it was no longer under warranty. Thanks for the help Don

Being a GM based engine might be able to use the auto equiv.I`m sure just the bearing can be replaced.

Your engine model number is 5.7GXi-J
The tensioner is part number 3885250 Volvo's list price is around $80.
I can't say for sure, but that may be a GM part and not Volvo. So you might try a local Chevy dealer or NAPA and see if it's the same.
Should be fairly easy to replace, just depends on access.

Item 11 is the tensioner

Re: volvo 5.7 gxi clicking from auto tensioner

Well I got in and took a look at the tensioner and there does not seem to be any play in it at all.. and everything else seems to rotate smoothly. I played around with the belt a little and that did seem to help for a short time, then the sound returned and is more like a squeaking. I do have a good bit of belt dust present so I wonder if the belt just needs replacing. I looked at the markings on the tensioner and it does not look like it is stretched out all the way... Could you help me with a part number? I looked on line and could not find anything for the 5.7 gxi-J. The volvo parts site goes up to gxi-H. Also is this something I can get as a GM belt at Napa or something? If it takes the same belt as the gxi-H then i did find a number for that 3860086.

A belt will squeal if it's loose, but it won't squeak. Bearings squeak. Some rotating part is failing....
