Hi all,
I have just joined up after looking at the wealth of knowledge from you all!

I have a 98 Wellcraft eclipse 2000sc with Volvo Penta 5.7GS that has a cracked block! the engine i thought should have been a vortec motor but on closer inspection the inlet manifold has 12 bolts and stamped 96, i guess the motor was hanging around for some time before being put in to my boat.
I have just bought a new 5.7 GXI complete bobtail motor including motor mounts, risers etc crank water pump.
My question is this motor a direct swap over, plug and play or will i need to modify anything, and will my wiring harness just plug in to the control box as it does now?

Many Thanks.

Look at the harness connection on the engine, is it the same round 10 pin setup, or the newer 14 pin rectangular connector.

Well if you have a GXI it uses egc engine control...fuel injection and more. Did the eclipse have fuel injection to begin with..either way GXI a lot of rewiring..But it will really put a snap in the boat...

Won't take any rewiring, just an adapter harness and all the gauges, switches, and wiring harness going to the helm will work fine.
Don't confuse the EGC with the EVC engines. The EVC system would take some serious rewiring.

The trick is, if he ordered the engine from a "ReaL" VP dealer, they should have set him up with any adapters needed. There is also an installation manual kit that comes with those engines that should have answered his questions.

Re: Volvo 5.7gs swap to 5.7gxi

:confused:GXI does not use a EGC module?

Identification of engines equipped with the
EGC system is fairly easy as they
incorporate a new, distinctively shaped, 90.....
pin electronic control
module (shown at left) and
also have an 8 pin diagnostic
data connector.

So the "KIt" wiring it just supply's the male connection..and power's the module and of course sensor's etc.

Re: Volvo 5.7gs swap to 5.7gxi

This thread has nothing to do with the ECM, only about hooking up the engine to the helm.
I'm talking about an adapter to use is 14 pin main harness connector on the engine, to his 10 pin round connector on his harness, and the fact that he may already have it.
You're getting all carried away with the type of ECM, and that has nothing to do with any of it. His ignition key still supplies 12 volts to the engine when he wants to start it.

Ahh i see i was under the impression a GS was a carbed engine..then going to a electronic controller you know fuel pumps...and such ohh wrong again...

The GS was carbed, but just going to an EFI engine doesn't change the hookup from the helm. He just may need an adapter from round to rectangular.

Re: Volvo 5.7gs swap to 5.7gxi

Tail Gunner,
The GS is a carbed motor, the GXI is multiport fuel injected. The new motor has the wiring loom so as it is a bobtail motor the electrics are all wired up, just leaving a multi plug, i havent looked what type of plug it is and i assumed the multi plug would be the same as the existing round plug?

My other question is will this motor drop on to the existing mounts and exhaust pipes, and should the sx out drive connect to the engine as before.
Do you think this upgrade will be worth it in terms of resale value and extra power?

Many Thanks.

Yes, Yes, and Yes.

NEVER "Assume" anything on a boat. Just look at the plug on the engine and the harness and count and look at the shape. It will be very obvious.
Have you looked at the manuals that came with the new engine?
