My Boat starts great when I first put it in the water. After running 30 minutes or more and I shut it down for a while to swim it turns over and over and over before finally starting up. AMP meter is showing a constant 13 volts while cruising, and I have two batteries. I just bought this boat so I dont even know where to start to figure out why. Please HELP

First thing is first...what engine are we talking about here? Volvo built 15+ versions of the 5.8. Full model number or serial number would be very handy.

In the mean time, is it carbureted or fuel injected? What is your starting procedure both cold and warm?

It is a 1996 year model. Ill have to swing by storage and get the number off of it. However I can tell you it is carbureted. When Its cold I put it In neutral and pump the throttle about three times, it will fire right up. When it gets warm I have tried just cranking it with out doing anything, and also doing it the same as a cold start, but it doesnt seem to make a difference. It will start, it just spins over quite a few times before starting.

Take a look to see where your choke plate is at when you try to start it warm. It may not be opening all the way.

Also for your warm starts, try cracking the throttle open about 1/4 of the way then start it. Use the throttle-only button on the control to do this. Carbureted engines generally need the throttle slightly open for warm starts. In fact, Merc and Volvo both recommend this.

Great! Thanks for the advice! I will check the choke body and try cranking it at 1/4 Throttle. thanks for all of the input. I work on heavy equipment part time, but marine stuff is something new.

A mechanic told me today the boat could be vapor locking. If so what causes that and what can you do to fix it or determine if that is the cause?

Caused by heat. As a test, run your blower for 15 minutes after you turn off the engine and/or open the engine compartment to let the heat out. Then try to start it.
