Re: Volvo 8.1L Osi issues?

You can pull the risers and inspect the manifold riser joint at that time. I would assume you will want to change them no matter what.

Will be interesting to see which manifolds are on there. I would assume they have merc manis on there but who knows what was cobbled up to match the merc transom shield.

Good to know. I probably would change it all out right off the bat. That's a good question about the Mani's. I'll throw that on the list for the Tech when/if I get a hold of one.

Re: Volvo 8.1L Osi issues?

Thanks for the replies!

I'm told the original out-drives were the composite XDP drives by Volvo, which I read were riddled with issues. Or at least when paired with the 8.1's.

What I'm reading is here a lot of concern over the out-drive conversion, and not necessarily the engines. Interesting.

I had assumed that whomever wanted/needed the out-drives changed wanted away from the XDP drives. Are the B3 drives in this configuration a fright?

What about reliability of the 8.1's in general? Do you think I'm being lied to about the oil cooler issue? Sounds like this isn't necessarily a common issue as I would be lead to believe?

It's truly a shame, because the boat is in fabulous shape, however I have noted the broker hasn't been able to answer a lot of my questions, and has recently gone quiet.

Thanks again!

Ross
I'm sure by now you have done lot's of reading on other forums that have mentioned many problems with the osi setup with this engine package. Personally from all the bad on the internet about the problems plagued with that old setup, I'd look at this this as the owner did the right thing by switching over to B3's to help avoid major problems over time. Lot's of boats have been switched from Volvo drives to Mercruiser drives over time and everything typically turns out fine.

The 8.1's are a really good engine with few issues. I faintly recall hearing something about the oil coolers but that seemed to be a long while ago, but I don't believe it was a big enough issue to get all hung up over it and not buy the boat because of it. But that just me.:)

One thing to keep in mind would be the ease of "basic" engine service work between Merc and Volvo, Volvo wins in my opinion.

Good luck with your decision.:)

Re: Volvo 8.1L Osi issues?

Thanks to all above who posted on this issue and answered all of my questions with such great detail. I have decided against this boat (again), and I've got my sights set on boats with full MERC plants.

Lots of boats coming up this time of year on trade, so I know I"ll get what i'm looking for. I'll keep this thread alive for future questions, as I know there'll be lots.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate all the help.

Cheers!

Ross
