Does anyone know how to fix a hard shifting problem. I've read something about a cone clutch. If it is a cone clutch, does this mean total removal of both engine and outdrive to replace it? Here's the weird thing, when the engine is relatively cold, the "bump" is not really noticable, but once I've run it a while and started it a few times, the bump gets noticeably worse. I'm cringing at the responses I'll get on this one!!

If you are having problems shifting the cable would be the first place to look. It's probably OLD!!!A new cable might be all you need. It's not easy to change but can be done. Then look at the shifter then the shift mechanisim at the O/D. Don't worry about the cone untill LAST!!! J

What is you Idle speed? Shouldn't be more than 900 RPM. Have you compared your boat tach to a shop tach?

Ok, to close out this thread. I've adjusted the idle speed to 900rpm and bingo....no more obnoxious hard bumps when shifting into gear. Thanks to all.
