Volvo aq131d cooling system question

I have a 1990 Volvo penta aq131d. I started running a little warm yesterday and noticed in my strainer basket a few small pieces of impeller. I am new to Volvo I/O. Is there a impeller in the lower unit like a outboard or is what I am seeing coming from the raw water pump? Is the raw water pump the only pump that circulates lake/sea water?

thanks for any input

We do have members that know. But they also have jobs that pay for their boating fun. Have patience.

You could look up a parts diagram for your AQ to see what is used.

Bits O rubber??
Pump and impeller on the front of the motor.
The only raw water pump.
No pump in the drive.

You should back flush the heat exchanger since the impeller died.
The bits of impeller might have went past the strainer and got to the insert.
The insert can look NEW and still be clogged.
Flush it anyway and maybe a radiator shop if it's clogged.

Get ANY manual read it and then look up the parts diagrams.
This site has links to the best Volvo parts diagrams.

10 minute job. Impeller is on the lower right side when facing the motor. Its under the alternator. 2x 10mm bolts to remove the cover. Pry out the old impeller and remove all the chunks you can. Then flush it out best you can with a hose. Replace the impeller and keep a close eye on the temp gauge. Likely it pushed all the chunks out the exhaust. If not then you need to disassemble and clean each part of the debris. I did the same thing when I bought my boat. Second time out in the middle of the lake, wife and 2 kids on board. Luckily the PO had a spare parts bucket and tools on board.

The raw water pump on front of engine, brass body with two copper tubes connected, is the only lake/sea water pump.
Good news, it is inside the boat, not out on the leg.
Bad news, it needs to be in VERY GOOD shape to work correctly.
Any air leakage on the system which draws up the water will make it stop working.
Use a shop vacuum to get pieces of rubber out of the strainer hopefully pull them back from inside the heat exchanger.

It won't push past the heat exchanger.
If the basket doesn't catch it it's probably gonna stick in the insert.

Dennis suggested using a shop vacuum to clean the insert. Good idea.
The insert can look brand new and still be plugged!!
