1993 Volvo 7.4 engine with a DP-D outdrive

OK, now that I have the prop cone off I am still following a DP-C manual (becasue it's all I can find) the manual does not give instructions on the outer prop removal.

It appears the prop is on the spline without any attaching bolts or set screws. I've tried using penetrating oil and tapping with a mallet and it will not budge when I try to pull it off the spline.

I've read other forums addressing how to cut the propellar off, but before I do that I would like to give it the old college try to save the propeller first. Otherwise this the cost of this repair is going up even more

Any suggestions?

Re: Volvo DP-D Prop Removal

I had a set I had to cut off, I have a 290DP and nothing holds on the back prop other than the cone. I did have a set that I would have to lighly tap with a mallot to get the back one off, someone said it could of had burred up splines? The set I cut off had been on for a few years when I first got the boat, at that time someone suggested that i soak them in wd-40 but some one else said that would eat the orings up, i ended up cutting it off and not trying the wd-40.

Re: Volvo DP-D Prop Removal

I just bought the boat and I have no idea how long it has been since these props were off. The portion of the spline that is exposed looks good, but at the edge of the hub corrosion is obvious.

I wonder what a tortch will do if I heat the hub. I hate to cut the props off, but if I have to I will (maybe on Tuesday). If so, it will be my luck that I'll damage the spline.

Thanks!

Before you start cutting there is a tool that is made to remove the leading prop. Costs about $50.00 - contact your VP dealer. Looks similar to a plain ole' wheel puller but with some mods to it - obviously.
Soak it a LOT with PB Blaster first.

Re: Volvo DP-D Prop Removal

I just spoke to a fellow at a prop shop. He said I should heat the prop enough to "burn away the hub". He said this would be the "first option" (before cutting the prop) in order to save the propellers.

Anyone have any experience with this? If so, do you know of any unforseen issues that may arise with this route of propeller removal?

Thanks!
