Hello,

I have a 2006 DP-SM that has scraper seals that are loose and floating on the rod. The cylinders are not leaking...yet but went to a local VP dealer to find out what my options were and when they looked it up they said they discontinued them in 2011. Also the book did not list a rebuild kit. Their advice was to leave it until it leaks...which is fine but eventually they will need to be repaired and would like to do it when its out of the water.

Here is some info off the engine sticker for the drive unit.

DP-SM 1.78(M22)

Thanks

Find yourself a place that rebuilds hydraulic pumps. Maybe they can rebuild it for you.

$142.00 ram? More then just a kit

The kit will do 2 cylinders. A few O-rings and UHMW scraper seals. Unfortunately from what I understand there are no other options then buying the entire new cylinder. Email the seller on eBay to get exact details and make sure it is what you need.

Another option to look into would be while Volvo never offered a trim ram seal kit, OMC did have one that works with the Volvo rams. Trim ram cylinder reseal kit part number 985060. One kit per cylinder. OMC Stern Drive Seal Kit 985060 BRP OMC | eBay

Good luck.:)

Mr Rain: If you have an DIY ability, buy the "better than original" rebuild kit and do it yourself. Beats $1000 for a new ram set (because once one leaks, you fix it, and the other starts; believe me). Take them off (15min), take them to a bench, clean them up good and rebuild (30 min each).Buy yourself a good pin wrench from grainger for $10 (measure the pins and span, I don't want to go from memory and tell you wrong), the one in the kit is adjustable and I don't trust them not to tear up the pin holes in the end cap.

And, by the way, the rams are sized so they you can use your receiver and hitch pin if you don't have a vise.

oh yeah and flush the system when you re-install. I'll bet you have water in there, but just not enough for you to notice. mine started with this unexpected sheen on the water, but no change in level. put it in the rack and after a few days noticed the red stuff on the anti-cav plate. found water in the tank, just real hard to see until I pumped it out.

Re: Volvo DP-SM Trim

Thanks all for the posts. I ordered the "Better than New" kit which I just received today. I got home a little early today so figured Id try to take em off. Trimmed the drive all the way down, kicked it back a sec to take some pressure off maybe, removed snap rings and washers. I am able to move them back and forth on the shafts so it shouldnt be too hard taking them off.

Problem is, the hydraulic lines. They are 11mm and can only grab from one position. I tried a little but didnt want to strip the hex so I stopped. I guess WD-40 and some heat? I have hyd. wrenches at work I will bring home but I dont think they will fit...kind of tight to the cylinders. Any tricks to get these off without damage?

And btw, I tried that pin wrench that the rings came with. Its like a toy, dont know why they even send it.

Thanks again for the help.

My hydraulic lines came off without a problem Its a fresh water boat. My are standard size wrenches not metric. I tried using hyd wrenches and they did not fit. I ended up using an open end wrench. The pin wrench that came with it was a joke and I ended up making a heavy duty one. I would break the end caps loose with a pin wrench before taking the cylinders off the drive. It is the best way to hold them from turning.

Re: Volvo DP-SM Trim

Mr. Rain. I used 11mm open end spanner on the hyd lines, no issues coming off. There is an o ring on the end of the inner hose nipple, the nut just acts to compress the flare and ring. Putting them back on, required me to hold the hoses with pliers to keep them from rotating out of line and causing hose rub.

As to the pin wrench, like I said, grainger has nice fixed span wrench, 1-1/2" space, and whatever pin diameter (measure). like $10.

As stated, you can break the end plate loose with the pin wrench while on the drive, or do what I did (cause you have to get the end caps back on also. I used the hitch pin and receiver - they fit nicely. Besides, you'll need some way to fix the rod in order to get the right torque on the end bolt (mine was a real bear to get loose). watch out for the balls and springs.

Screw up that whole spring and ball thing and your drive won't stay down in rev, or kick up if you hit something in fwd.

clean the lands for the o-rings really well all the sealing is with the orings.

Ok, I was able to get both pins out and clean em up. I've been to sears, home depot and lowes. Also called a few marine supply stores. I dont see any pin/spanner wrench on Grainger so if you have a link or part number that would be great.

I also noticed if that one of the plastic bushings were missing so I would like to replace all of them if I can find them. What do you use to clean out the tubes??bottle brush or is it even necessary?

Mine were pretty clean. I just used a rag. You only have to go in as far as the bushings, a bottle brush should work fine.

I had to make my own pin wrench. Do you have access to a welder and some machine shop tools?

I can send a pic of what i made.
