volvo ignition and trim problems

2003 volvopenta 5.7 Gxi-C running fine, suddenly stopped when idling. Battery, fuel pump OK. Absolutely NOTHING when turn ignition key, completely dead. Evaluated kill switch, seemed OK. Took apart throttle unit, thinking may not be back in neutral, nothing there. Went behind dash board and jiggled ignition switch, and boat started instantly. Have you seen these switches go bad? could it be something else connected to the switch that just needed time to cool? Coil?

So I get back to the marina excited the boat is running well, and now the trim won't work. Both the throttle handle and the unit it connects to were "hanging by their wires" as I struggled to put it back together in rough seas. So prob a loose wire somewhere there now, but don't see anything. Ended up hot wiring directly to the trim motor to get it up, but now gotta trouble shoot that too. Any thoughts? can't see any obvious loose wires, could a relay or other part/issue be affected by my man handling the throttle handle/linkage?

lastly, I'm sure most of you know this, but for those who don't: you can bypass the trim switch by tapping directly into coupling above trim motor. blue [sky] for up, green [grass] for down. Just connect the pos lead of battery to blue and neg to green to go up, and visa versa.

Hi
There are so many circuit configurations for Volvo Penta engines (and other makes I guess) which are further modified by the makers of the particular boat it is fitted to.
I now have the SELCO Volvo Penta manual (3608) which covers models from 2003 to 2012 and it has proved very useful. It has a large number of circuits covering many combinations. This may help you diagnose your problems.
I recent asked for help here on Trim gauges and eventually found enough info in the circuits to help me.

the seloc manual is a knee pad. get the factory manuals.

however to the OP's issue, you have something loose behind the dash. most likely the key switch, however you now have to actually troubleshoot it and find it, or the loose connection will leave you stranded.

update: regarding the trim, the 10 amp fuse is blown. I cut the wires [red, blue and green] adjacent to the switch because I was thinking there may be an issue with the switch and I could over ride it to get the boat home. I'll replace the fuse, but how do I over ride the switch? guessing hand connect red [power] to blue [up], then connect green to ground? Is this what the switch would do internally? I have looked at the wiring schematics but really only understand the basics. Thanks.

Replaced the fuse, connected the red and blue wires and the trim worked. Not sure why the fuse blew. gonna replace the ignition switch and adjacent circuit breaker and hopefully this won't happen again. Not sure why boat initially stopped and fuse blew, obviously too much current coming from somewhere. any thoughts ?
