I have a 1997 SX Cobra on my Stiper that has a few smallish blisters and chips on the paint. I was hoping to just sand out the small blemishes, prime and paint them. Problem Im having at this point is finding paint that matches. I have tried both the Volvo I/O gray and the Cobra charcoal. neither are close. Has any one ran into this in between color of metalic gray ? Is is available in spray can ?

Have you tried the Moeller line of outdrive paints?

I have used the Johnson white and Cobra Charcoal metallic and they matched very well...

Yes, the two cans that I have purchased were the Moeller Cobra charcoal (way too dark) and the Volvo I/O gray ( way too light ). There must have been a third color for the joint venture sx cobra.

Could be....I know they only show one color of Volvo drive paint.
You may just have to paint the whole drive..

well I was thinking of that but.... It seems like I would need to remove the outdrive and disassemble it at least partially to be able to do a decent job. That seems like alot of work just to touch up a few spots but I know that having bare metal showing is not a good Idea either...... I have maybe 6-10 spots smaller than a quarter that are chipped or blistered.

I know his doesn't help your issue but I ran into a similar problem. I was able to find a can of Tempo brand Volvo paint but it was only enough to do the gearbox, associated covers, and the transom shield. Went to get another can and found out that Tempo doesn't make paint anymore so had to switch to Moeller brand - of course it didn't match.

Luckily, everything is out of the boat so the repainting wasn't terrible - just a pain.

Mine happened to be the white and not the charcoal you're talking about but wanted to let you know it might not be rainbows and lollipops finding the right color.

You might want to check automotive stores for a closer match. If you want to get an exact match, most auto paint suppliers can mix up some for you and put it in a rattle can. Will be around $30 a can but I know what you mean about a cobbled up, touch up paint job.

Re: Volvo/omc Sx Cobra Paint

I have the same drive in my boat. Mine is a 1994. When i first bought the boat the drive had been neglected by the previous owner. It had alot of pitting and corrosion all over the place. I sanded the affected areas down, and i primed it with a Zinc Chromate primer. It is Green in color, and it is especially formulated to be used on aluminum. I was able to purchase the drive paint from a volvo penta parts dealer ( Marinepartsexpress.com). The spray can is not cheap, but the color will be the correct color. I have had the boat for three years now, and no sign of corrosion on the drive. I hope this helps.

I have the green primer and have purchased 2 different cans of the color both Moeller brand (neither cheap). Do you know what the brand of the paint was that worked for you ?

Ok. I talked to the people at marine parts express. They agreed that there was a third color called metallic silver. They are sending me a can of the original vp paint. I am optimistic that it will be right. Thank you for you help !
