My 1996 Volvo Penta DP-S outdrive is having tilt problems. It will go down but not up. Actually it works intermittently, sometimes it goes up a little bit, other times nothing happens. If I wait a while it often goes up enough to trailer the boat home. I don't have a manual over-ride button to trailer. Any advice?

Thanks, Eric 22' Davis (1996 Radoncraft)

Re: Volvo Outdrive Won't Tilt Up

try swapping the relays at the pump and see if the problem occurs when trying to lower the drive

if the problem remains the same, you have a wiring problem

Re: Volvo Outdrive Won't Tilt Up

Since you don't have an override button, I would bet that your drive was upgraded to a DP from a single prop drive. Volvo always used the trim system with the black box to prevent over trimming, but it had to have an override button.
Do you have a black box with some LED's on it that flash?

First thing you need to do is check all the connections and connectors going to the pump and the trim system from the control. The intermittant sounds like corrosion somewhere.

If you don't have the black box, and the connections all are clean and solid, it may be in the fuse/relay box on the trim pump.

Here is how to test it.

Thanks to both of you for the quick response. Don, yes, I have a black trim limit control box with LED lights. Appreciate the advice.

If you have the black box, then you have an override switch somewhere. Without it, you should not be able to get the drive above trim at all.
Where is your trim switch, in the throttle lever? Do you have a picture you could post of your throttle control?
ALSO, Do you have the full model number of your engine handy, or even the SN would work.

Re: Volvo Outdrive Won't Tilt Up

Don,

The trim/tilt button is on the throttle. I have a 1996 5.7GI Volvo Penta Ser. No. 4110142059 w/DP-S outdrive. #4112029338. I understand that late models may be equipped with a redesigned valve body with no manual release valve. That would mean that the only way to manually bring up the drive is to removed the bolts to the aft trim rod. I can try to post a picture of the throttle but too dark in Cal. now.

Thanks, Eric

Need pictures of your control at this point. The SN for the drive doesn't help, and the SN for your engine shows it's a 97 LK model.
Hard to say what control you have, it may not even be Volvo.
With your trim system, you MUST have a tilt override button. Is this boat new to you?

Don,

I'm the second owner, no upgrades. Built by Davis Boats in Paso Robles. Throttle control is by Morse Marine Prod. Has hand lever with thumb outdrive tilt on side. I can get a picture of the throttle. Any other shots that you need?

Thanks, Eric

Ok, here's a pic of my tilt/trim switch on throttle lever. Also shot of my tilt pump. Where's the relays?

Thanks, Eric

Squeeze the trim up and the tilt up buttons at the same time and see if it comes up, also try the tilt up button only.
Have seen some of the early DP drives wired in some strange ways from the boat manufacturer. Olympic had a mess around that time that just never worked.

That's what I always do, Don. I never have to trim my engine but when I tilt the engine push both buttons at the same time. Maybe I screwed something up because I have been doing it for so long?

Thanks for the comeback. Eric
