Hi I have a problem with a D3 110 engine at the starter motor, see image.
I turned on engine and it started, I checked the water flow all good so I let it idle for 15 mins, I then walked past the engine and could smell a strong burning odor, I quickly turned off engine emergency stop button. keft it for a day and it wouldn't start
I then replaced that with new starter motor .
I re fitted the new starter motor and it worked fine, I was having trouble with the forward revers control valve stripped and repaired that and installed, this took 4 to 5 weeks before I finished it.
I stretched out to access the key to start engine while I was stretched to hear the engine start. I heard it turn over but it made some noise as it wouldn't start that was unusual as I had it running at least 10 times in that 5 weeks.. I let go of the key and it sounded like it started just as I released the key, I quickly turned on again and I couldn't hear it turn over at all, I went to engine room and could smell something burnt. I have a switch on engine, so I can start engine from the engine bay, simply by turning on the key at the helm, I can then simply switch the switch on and the starter starts the engine, So from the engine room I tried the switch it just went Duddd and stopped.
I thought it was a flat battery so charged it over night and tried again, it still went Duddd no even trying to start. Then I thought the battery has a short or dropped Cell, so I had to charge up the other engines battery over nigh as that battery was 1.86v, it charged up ok13v, when I was placing that battery in the port engine room I knocked the Port engine room battery and it started sparking as it was very loose, I had knocked the battery lead getting in and out of the engine room multipule times, its very tight.
So tighten the Positive lead, then I noticed smock coming from the starter motor so quickly removed the pos battery lead.
The starter motor is behind the water heart exchanger and takes 3 hrs to remove or get at the starter motor to see what the problem is. I have diagram below showing how the wiring is connected. I was going to try the Stb battery to see in there is a short in the other port battery, but thought Id ask here if anyone can look at how I have set up the wiring colours to the starter motor.
Cant upload image as site problems so I will write the wire locations, from the engine wiring loom there is a inline plug, it has 3 red wires and one yellow and red coloured wire, if looking at the end of solenoid two red wires go to the top bolt, th eyellow and red wire goes to the right hand side bolt of solenoid. The Pos battery cable goes to the alternator, from there there is a smaller but large wire going from th epos terminal of the alternator and attaches on the top bolt on the starter motors solenoid, I also have a red wire coming from that bult also going to a hand held switch. where the yellow and red wire attaches to the solenoid bolt I have run a black wire to the other side of the switch. Thais allows me to start engine from engine room. I have checked the wiring from Volvo engine diagrams and it looks like there are attached how I have them. Can anyone help
