I have a slow leak/drip coming from the base of my raw water pump when the engine is running. It looks as though there is a drain screw (or some other type of screw) at that location that is becoming corroded. (see yellow arrow on photo). I snapped the photo by putting the camera down in the bilge area and aiming it up at the engine. I have not had the opportunity to really get under there yet and investigate it thoroughly.

The boat is used in salt water and I have been chasing corrosion all around this engine. I removed and inspected the impeller and seal ring early in the season, both looked to be in good shape.

The screw and that section of the pump are not listed on the following schematic/parts list of the pump.

Does anybody know if this is a drain screw? If so, what are my options to repair/replace? If not, what is it? If it is a screw/drain I am reluctant to tighten too much because there is a good chance the threads are corroded?

That is a weep hole. There is a seal that I believe you can buy separately tha is bad in the pump housing.

Replace the pump. For water to leak out that weep hole means there is water running through the bearings. NOT Good.

Re: Volvo Penta 1999 4.3GL raw water pump leak

Thanks for the responses, I am trying to find a place to buy a new raw water pump at a decent price. I replaced the circulating water pump at the beginning of this season. I imagine the process will be similar.

When you say water has gotten into the bearings, is this the bearings of the water pump or the bearings of the engine crank shaft? If it is in the crank shaft is there anything that I have to do when I replace the pump?

I can?t seem to remember if there was ever a sealing ring (part # 827247) installed. Could this have been the cause?
