Volvo penta 230a/sp drive trim??s

Help! I have a Volvo penta 230a w/sp-A drive, the trim gauge isn't working the gauge itself works as in it powers up and shows. If I play with the sensor by loosening it and moving it the display on the dash changes numbers. When I unplug the harness at the sensor the display reads 63 and a red light flashes (Volvo square digital gauge). However when I use the trim the gauge stays at whatever number it was last on. what am I missing?

That system isn't the best thing Volvo ever did.
The sending unit could be shorted out?
The connector could be corroded.
Lube the shaft and clean everything.
