Volvo Penta 250a replacement

Hi I have a Volvo Penta 250a on a 290 sp leg. The engine needs a complete rebuild, which I am about to start, does any one know of a newer replacement engine that would fit onto the 290 sp leg. I liked the newer 3.0L G but this means I would have to change the leg. Any ideas welcome Thanks

Hi Bondo I will give you some more information. My engine (250A) is form the 1990s and is a 2.5L straight 4 petrol engine the 250A was a replacement for the AQ series of engines. My 250A needs a lot of work but my volvo leg is in very good condition. So the answer is to update both engine and leg but my question is can I put a newer model engine on to my old leg which is a 1993 290 sp and the gearing ratio on the leg is correct for straight 4 cylinder engines.
I have been told that conversions exist so different engines can be fitted to volvo legs but I have not been able to find any information on this.
To sum up I am just tring to find out if it is worth rebuilding my engine or do i have other options.

Ayuh,.... I was afraid of that,.... Yer waay over my Volvo knowledge,....

Ya got a Volvo I-4, 'n want to use a GM I-4, with the original drive,....

Is that the one with no front motor mount, the motor hangs out free in the bilge,..??

The 3.0 was never mated to the 290 outdrive. Imo, rebuilding the 250 is rhe most practical way to go.

Hi Guys

Thanks Bondo to answer your question my 250a does have engine mounts, it was the smaller 2L engines that did not. I have fitted one of these and yes all that weight on the transom does seam very strange but it works.

Thanks Captmello I though that was the case but just needed to check and yes I will be rebuilding the 250a
