Hi, I would like some help with this. I am taking my AQ 270 outdrive apart to reseal it and repaint it, the outdrive ran fine before it just looked like crud.. So i am ordering a few new parts. I have everything pretty much disassembled thanks to the workshop manual Don S. Provided in previous posts... Although I cannot figure out on the Lower part of the outdrive. How to get those gears out.. I read the manual I just dont understand. Is there some sort of tool i need? I know there is what looks like a lockwasher (like the one used for the propeller where you have to bend one of the tabs in... than a nut with 4 notches opposite of each other... But when i try to use any sort of tool to remove this nut after i bend the tab back out... it moves the Shaft... i cant hold it .. is there a technique or tool that i need?
Or can i just tape up the shaft in order to have the paint removed than painted...

Please let me know thanks.

I wouldn't remove the propshaft just for painting. What I did on mine was remove the zinc and tape up the rest.

Ok but what about the gunk that might have fallen between that bearing? because when i removed the middle part of outdrive there was some paint that fell down there? Also isnt that Zinc ring just a pain to get off?? the screw wont come off. I have to go to Harborfreight to buy a fat screwdriver... or i may just take it to my machine shop and they can unscrew it with thier air powered tools.

Unless you are changing the bearings theres no need to take the lower unit vertical shaft nut off.
Pull the prop shaft bearing carrier. got to do this any way to replace the shaft seals. there is a pull tool for th is that another guy built. Ill see if I can post a picture of it for you. or you use a slide hammer. the puller tool works better.

Heres the puller tool designed and built by RicardoMarine ..it works much better than the slidehammer. .same tool but diff hole patern for single prop lower unit.

Re: Volvo Penta 270 Outdrive Rebuild

ok... so i am going to take the lower drive for blasting so i can prep it for paint... question is, does i need my plug out?
and also what if when the guy is blasting it gets in those linear holes in the back where the water intake is? If i tape it up than it wont be blasted off and i wont be able to get a good surface for paint?
i dont plan to repaint the engine the same as it was, this engine will be a different color.

If you're going to media blast the drive I think complete disassembly is required.

I agree, if you have the lower off, if you get just a little bit of grit in the bearing on the vertical shaft or in the prop shaft seal, you are in big trouble.

That is what I figured, Ok so now since im not a machinest and have no welding or metal cutting skills, where can i rent or get one of those Pullers that BillBayliner suggested?
Maybe one of you fellow Iboaters will let me loan it, or even rent it to me?

Don I just noticed something, you are in Western WA? Do you own a repair shop from what i hear you work with volvo penta tools?
where in washington is your shop if you have one, and how much would you charge to take the lower drive gears out, so its just a casting so i can get it ready for paint?

I retired this spring and sold the tools I had.
You could pay your local shop to take it apart for you far cheaper than paying for gas to come all the way down here to take it apart. Or, make or buy the OEM tools. You do have the OEM service manual for your drive so you can see how things come apart don't you?

Yes i made a mistake and bought one from that one website, like the gentleman on one of your posts. But I also downloaded the one you put on 4shared website. Thank you!
The one in my manual is a Slide Hammer type. Which shop should i take it to? Do you have any recommendations?
I talked to a few in Everett at the Marina, like Performance Marine since they specialize in Volvo's but they are expensive.
Thanks for the reply.

74bayliner,

If you are in Everett, these guys should be very near. Never used them, no affiliation, but they seem to have tons of of older stuff. My guess even a puller (or the service of one). http://www.sterndrive.com

They look like a very cool place but judging on the prices of thier Upper Gear Box for my unit 8,000+ for a used one, and the reseal kit (after market) ist 147, but the one at HarborMarine is 70 bucks. for the upper gear box. Thanks for the recommendation, i will give them a call just to see anyhow.

Didn't even look that far. At those prices, maybe I should part of my engine/drive combo and get a convertible :)

Re: Volvo Penta 270 Outdrive Rebuild

haha I know right?
But i got some great news Folks! My restoration project *link in my sig*
is gonna continue shortly.
My parents are going to let me and my wife move in with them to save on the costs of rent to save up for down payment on a house.
My wife informed me that my 1300 paycheck which normally was used for gas, bills, apartment, etc. I was notified that i can use
my whole paycheck for my boat! so i figure that I will have the Trailer and engine rebuilt by new years :)
i love the holidays.
