Ok on an previous thread I was ginven by don instructions on replacing the u joint bellows. i began to look at taking off the helmet. I found that i have the type of pin in the helmet that has 2 allen head bolts. I had gotten 1/4 20 bolts to thread in the two side holes to push out the pin. I found that there are no threads on the left hole and what is left of a bolt with an easy out broke off in the other hole. If I can not extract the other one out is it possible to tap the hole to a bigger size and use a slightly bigger bolt to thread in the holes? if not is there any other way to remove the helmet or what are my options? Any help is always appreciated

Just use the single hole. Just use some care. Put some pressure on the single bolt and tap around the helmut with a mallet. Some more pressure and tap some more. You are just trying to keep the pin straight.
I seldom have to use more than one bolt.
Just make sure it's cleaned and greased when you put it back together.

I will try that as long as I can get the other one extracted out. What would be my options in the worst case I cant get the second one out?

Either get a new one, or put it back in with the broken one still in it. Just put some grease on the pin and replace the bellows every couple of years.

Sorry Don i might not of explained myself correctly. The one hole is stripped and the other I may not be able to get the broken screw with the extractor broke off in it out. If thats the case is there any other way of getting the pin out to get to the bellows for replacing? thanks and sorry for taking up your time with this

Re: Volvo Penta 275 out drive help!!!

Sorry about that, must have misread it.
If you can find a new pivot pin, stick a couple of 3/8 bolts thru the new one and the old one, but keep them above the treads in the gear box.
Then use a screwdriver or something between the bolts to twist the original pin. A little penetrating oil and a few twists and some needle nose vise grips usually pull them out.
In a couple of extreme salt water cases over the past hundred years, I had to use some different tactics. Like removing the helmut from the steering fork.

I was pondering something similar to what your saying but didnt want to mess anything up. (it aint much but its mine) How difficult would it be to go and take it off at the fork? Anything special i need to know if i go that route? Im only asking because I really dont think im going to be able to get that one extracted due to the hardness of the easy out in it and getting a bit to actually bite when trying to drill it.

Sorry Don i posted before i was ready. Would it help at all if I set the two mounting allen heads in part way and tried to turn the pin a little that way to at least free it up and then take them out and try pulling it out as you mentioned with needle nose?

OK Well I have yet to get the pin out. i tried everything you had suggested and then some. If I decide to go inside and take it off by the steering fork am going to get in over my head? From what I can tell it just looks like a lot of unbolting and time consuming things of that nature which is fine if thats what i have to do. just asking for your opinion. thanks

What is the Volvo Penta part number for this type pin (ie, the type with 2 threaded 1/4-20 holes)? I need to buy 2 but can't find it in any of the diagrams. I assume it's the same part that is used in the SP-C helmet bushing.
