volvo penta 280 engine compatibility question

i've volvo penta 280 with aq175a engine in 1982-87 (not sure there) bayliner capri caddy 21ft, having performance issues and thinking about throwing v8 in there, what are my options? do i need to modify outdrive? it looks like i do have room there to fit bigger engine.

Yes, they use different gear ratios between the 6 and the 8. You could swap props, but you loose efficiency. If swapping props worked just as well as a different gear ratio the drive manufacturers wouldn't have all the different ratios.

New gears in the lower, will have to be reshimmed and gear pattern adjusted.

It's not a DIYer job if that's what you mean. A new gear set is $2800, and not that is not a typo and does not include the bearings, seal kit or labor.

Your best bet would be to find a used lower with the correct ratio. You would need to make sure the used lower has the bearing race included, or you will be tearing that one down to replace the bearing.

how about engine? any recommendations? more powerful v6 won't require modifications to outdrive?
