1976 Volvo Penta AQ140 with 280 drive. Trying to remove the helmet and shaft. My problem is at the top inside. Removed grease fitting and can not remove plastic cap or what ever it is. I see no reverence in any parts diagram or manual. The plastic cap does not look like you can pry up.I have loosened the steering arm bolt and am wedging a chisel to try and loose from haft. don't know if I can go up or must pull from the bottom. I have not removed the gear box yet. If I can not get he top apart I may just put back together end wait a month or two.
Thanks in advance Bob

What is wrong with the helmet? Is the steering fork that attaches to the helmet worn or damaged? Are you having a problem removing the stainless slug that attaches the helmet to the upper gear box?

first, read the factory manual.

to drop the steering fork, you must remove the helmet and drive. then remove the pinch bolt, and drive a wedge in the split and the fork should almost fall out.

The steering fork has to much play. Where is the pinch bolt? My problem is removing this "cap" or what ever is in the picture on top of the steering fork shaft. Is the a bolt under there that must be removed? What holds the shaft up?The cap is oblong and extends back under the transom see no way to remove.
A factory manual would help I have a CLYMER it is no help. I will look around
Thanks

That is the end of the steering helmut shaft. Its not a cap.

Look at the picture of the tiller arm. Then ask your pinch bolt question to yourself. If you dont see it, put the tools down

You need a factory manual. A clymer manual is only useful during a toilet paper shortage or to start a fire.

Go to the Volvo Penta web site and get a factory manual

You will need 2 steering fork bushings, the seal and a few other parts
