Hi all, I recently had the misfortune of having one of the pin receivers on my transom shield break,,,,one of the two that hold the outdrive to the shield..........about half of one broke,,,,,,question,,,can this be built back up by a good welder/???? And I'm assuming that the shield itself will have to be removed and replaced. this seems like a fairly straight forward job, but, what are some of the pitfalls involved......it is an AQ200D with a 280 outdrive in a 1984 fishcract 30' houseboat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

In the back of the Volvo Penta manual it states.

Parts which can be welded
1. The neck of the flywheel housing for the attachment
of the rubber bellows. Grind the neck
smooth after welding to get an even surface.
2. The transom shield except on and around the
suspension ears, steering journals, around the
suspension pins
and the attachment of the trim
cylinders.
3. The shift mechanism cover.

Ok, sounds like any welding is out. How about pitfalls for removing the transom shield. Can the exhaust Y be removed from the transom shield without removing the engine. Can the shield be removed without removing the engine????

Any help is great and appreciated
thanks,
Rick

Would anyone like to post any suggestions in regards to replacing the transom shield?

Think about pulling the motor. You will never get the Y pipe around the bellhousing and you are going to need the room. Not to mention you still need to disconnect the bellhousing from the shield and separate them to.

Unless someone has written one, I doubt it exists. You can check in the outdrive manual and see whats there. The Volvo manuals are a bit "limited". You can find the manuals at http://boatinfo.no/

Have done few times on 280 ,not a big deal ,you will need to lift the engine out for easy access.
I have extra shield available ,usually selling on ebay.
Good luck.
