Hello fellow boaters,

I am trying to remove my volvo penta 280(circa 1975 lower) unit from the transom sheild assembly. There are two large screws/pins that connect the two assemblies. The pins have large slots in them indicating that they may be threaded like the hex-screw/pin at the top of the steering helmet. my volvo penta manual just says, "remove locking screws and pins".
On a previously similar post for a much newer outdrive system, they advised to drive out with a brass punch. I need somebody to reply that has done this before on my model/year outdrive.
my questions are:

1) are these pins threaded?
2) if they are to be "driven out", please provide specific instructions and tools needed on how to accomplish.

I tried uploading pictures, but in doing so I received an "invalid file data" error message. perhaps a moderator can assist.
thanks

Welcome aboard

the slots are there to align the retaining bolts. the pins are not threaded (although the later 290 pins have a threaded hole for a slide hammer).

if they wont turn, turn your outdrive to clear the helmet ears and using a brass drift, beat them inward until they come loose.

Remove the 1/4 by 20 retaining screws.
Then a small propane torch to heat the pin and the aluminum housing.
WD/40 or PB Blaster.
Remember to turn the wheel to make room for the pin as you knock it through.
