Volvo Penta 290 DP not working

I am considering a boat with a Volvo Penta 290 DP that the owner said was working but started making a rattling noise and quit working. I have only had outboards and wanted to see what you guys thought the chances were of having to replace the entire outdrive? Unfortunately that is all the info I have on the issue and the boat is 12 hours away from me. Any advise would be appreciated.

Keep looking, that is not a boat you want to even consider buying.

If you can't take a boat for a test run, then don't buy it.
