Replaced the head gasket, replaced a broken valve spring and lapped the valves, now when I start the engine the hose connecting the valve cover to the carb has white smoke coming from it, so much that if I attach it to the carb it chokes out, if I plug the hose with my finger it builds up pressure, there is also oil droplets coming out.

I am awaiting my compression testing tool to get the numbers but is there anything else I’m not thinking of?

Sounds like you should do a compression and leak down test. Some blow by is normal but it sounds like you are having a lot. There should be some more guys chiming in soon.

compression test and leak down

blow by is normal

lots of blow by is a sign of bad rings

white smoke is normally water vapor, however if its a really light blue, it would be oil

Tested compression finally cylinders 1 and 2 are only at 30-45 psi 3 and 4 are both around 140. Hooked up air to it and there is air leaking back through the carb, I loosened some intake valves and stopped that leak only to find more leaking from the holes next to the pushrods with the valve cover off. there is no bleed through from cylinder 1 over to cylinder 2 so they are sealed. Seems like my rings are stuck and or shot, should I try some deep creep or liquid wrench on top of the pistons overnight?

If it is shot rings, does anyone happen to know what price range I am looking at to get that completed at a shop?

What cylinder was the air leaking back through the intake? was that cylinder at top dead center? what % leak down was each cylinder?
If you put oil in and get more compression could be the rings. but i need more info on the leak down to really understand whats going on.

Depending on shop price to fix it all depends on how much work you want to do or can do. i have my mercruiser 140 at the machine shop got all the parts tested had a spun rod bearing after getting crank rod bored over with pistons, oil pump, gasket set and head i was looking at over $1,000 and i am doing all the assemble.

Hunter404 I was not able to get a leak down test complete, but I did put some liquid wrench and marvel mystery oil on cylinders 1 and 2 for about 3 days . I am completely shocked but today I was able to get the boat running and up to full temp, I checked the compression And cylinder 1 is at 85-90 psi and cylinder 2 is at 150. Also cylinders 3 and 4 are both at 150 after getting it up to temp.

Tomorrow I am going to adjust the rocker arms again to make sure the valves are fully seated during the compression check.

Did adjust the rocker arms do anything? Sounds like you my have one bad hole.
