Hello everyone im a new member with a quick question.
I own a 2005 sting ray 180rx with a 3.0 volvo penta motor. toward the end of last season (im in NY) my boat started to overheat. I think it is a problem with the outdrive not pulling in water? also another question does the outdrive itself have a impeller or is it just the on board motor?

On a Volvo motor the impeller is on the front of the engine, not in the drive like with a Merc. Start with checking it, as it is usually the cause of overheating. Do you routinely change the impeller? Volvo lists it as a regular maintenance item.

i had very recently changed the impeller but there is no suction from the outdrive to the engine what can be the problem?

What is the engine's serial number or full model number? There are several different versions of the 3.0 that could be used. The boat year doesn't mean much.

If there is an air leak between the drive and the raw water pump, then the pump will not suck water up from the drive.

Remove the hose from the raw water pump to the thermostat housing at the housing and start the engine and see if water comes out of the hose.

That's for the outdrive, need the model number or serial number of the engine.

Re: volvo penta 3.0 overheating problem

I have been running into broken plastic water nipples latley. Theres a hose that runs out the back of the transom to the od on the port side. It connects to the OD by a plastic fitting that can crack if you leave the OD trimmed up (my theroy at least) and to change it, you'll have to pull the drive. Very tough to see, but if its cracked you would suck air when you're plained out or on muffs - if it is having problems pulling water just sitting in the water then I would start elseware...

i took apart the out drive and found pieces of the old impeller blocking the holes that suck up water on the drive. thanks for the input people :)
