volvo penta 3.0l 2004 fires but wont run

Hope somebody can help !!
Have been out on my Fourwinns 170 (2004) today but have broken down.
Started at the slip no problem but had warning beeper going after a few minutes. Water temp was ok and oil pressure ok so thought it was a faulty beeper. Started moving and engine cut out.Now it will fire but wont run anymore.
Am thinking it must be electrical problem as even adding fuel down carb wont keep engine running.
Any ideas ?

Turn the ignition key to the run position and see if you have voltage to the purple wire on the coil.

It does fire when you turn the ignition key and all 4 plugs spark. It's as though something electrical is then stopping it from continuing to run. Almost like it is a cut out for low oil pressure or high temperature.It cranks no problem. Have put fuel down carb so not fuel problem

Your engine has nothing that will shut it off except the ignition switch. The alarms will only make noise, they can not stop the engine from running.

Hook up a timing light to the coil wire and and start the engine. The light will flash for that short time, see if it stops as the engine dies.

Are you thinking that it may be the coil breaking down as had a brief moment once before when it stopped but started again and ran fine. Also have had a problem with the cooling water pump but cant imaging this problem is connected to that.

Have no clue yet. Just trying things to see where the problem may be. If you aren't loosing spark, it's probably not the coil.

Am sort of thinking I must be losing the spark as if it had a spark and fuel it would surely continue running ? It is as though it has no fuel really but have put petrol down the troat of the carb which would normally allow it to run for a short while.It has got fuel coming out of the jets when you pump the throttle. If you increase the throttle it just runs the engine for a fraction of a second longer.

Do you have tether switch on the control box?.

You can try jumping 12 volts from the battery side of the ignition switch to the purple ignition wire.

It does fire momentarily.Not sure if you would get any spark if the kill switch was faulty ?

You would as long as the starter is engaged. The purple wire on your starter solenoid does that. It's there to get full voltage to the ignition during cranking.

So perhaps it coud be the kill switch as as soon as it fires and I release the ignition key there would no longer be a spark ?

OK but bring a jumper wire with alligator clips so you can jump 12 volts to the purple wire on the key switch.

Hi guys thanks very much for your help.
Ended up having 2 problems not related.The starting issue was the kill switch as removed it and linked wires together and it started and ran fine. The warning beeper was overheat of the riser I think as the raw water pump is leaking and I think it is due to the bearing being worn allowing air to be drawn in through the seal infront of the bearing. Have worked on this pump many times replacing impellors and bearings.It seems to be a re occuring problem with this pump for some reason ?

Have you ever pulled the thermostat housing and checked for impeller pieces?.

I have fitted a new thermostat just recently. I changed the original pump housing for another secondhand one as it was very worn inside. Ever since I have had this boat this year it has had problems with the water pump. Are the pumps problematic ?
