Hi everyone. I guess I'm asking this for a friend. My friend was out boating yesterday and it died on them. The story goes they were out idling around all day with no problems and as soon as they went to give it some gas and go it made some noise, smoked, smelled horrible, and died. That's all I got out of it. They sent a video and too me from the video it looked like the batteries or the starter might be bad, it didn't look like it had the power to turn the motor over and that would explain the smell and the smoke but that wouldn't explain why it died in the water, I mean it was already running? I'm going out to look at it tomorrow. I'm just wondering if anyone's had any experience with this or knows anything to look at. Thanks a lot. by the way its carbonated

I know this is late, but I would check for a disintegrated impeller. Sounds like it might of shredded and blocked the TS housing and caused an overheat situation.

First step: Inspect impeller

If found to be missing any vanes proceed to second step:

Second Step: You will need to remove the TS housing and remove all the little rubber pieces from the channels and passages. You will need to "reconstruct" the impeller to verify that you have all the pieces accounted for. Keep pushing a coat hanger or solid copper wire through all the passages until you get it all.

Replace the impeller EVERY year from now on.

.....ask me how I know.
