Volvo Penta 4.3 GL Burnt Oil and Engine Noise

After a recent head gasket replacement I’ve been strugglig with setting the ignition timing. The engine sounds like it’s grinding metal, like not lubricated well too despite having brand new oil and a supplement of Murphy’s Miracle Oil in it. When I tried setting the total advance the engine appears to have burnt through the oil within a matter of about a minute at 2500 rpms. Now the engine squeaks on rotation, as if the grinding got worse. what could be the problem?

The pictures shows what the brand new oil looks like after about 10 minutes total run time.

I have not a compression check since finding the oil like this. I also am not convinced that the timing is set correctly as I haven’t been able to find specs that seem to work with my engine.

From what you are describing I feel that you have a spun rod bearing. You are going to have to pull the engine and then the pan and you will then see the problem. The bottom line is you will need a new rebuilt short block or if you have the tools and experience a re ground crankshaft kit. Of course you will have to completely take the engine apart to clean out the oil passages.

Some info on why you replaced the head gasket Almost any GM engine will run ok at 6-8 BTDC

I replaced the head gasket because we severely overheated the engine last season. The impeller was bad. We didn’t know it at the time. Changing the impeller let us get on the water a couple more times but the boat would backfire on acceleration (or so it sounded). A mechanic did a compression check and found cylinder 1 was flooded with water. So I pulled it apart down to the head gasket and started t back up. However, I couldn’t find the timing specs anywhere that definitively said what it should be.

I dint recall what the oil pressure during the lst run, I just recall that it had positive oil pressure and the temperature remained low. I only started it up in my driveway and let it run for a few minutes before shutting it down again fearful of the noise.

I might have had the alternator belt on too tight when running it. That could lead to burning up a bearing, yes?

Ayuh,...... Only if it's the alternator bearin's,.....

If ya think it's motor bearin's, pull the oil filter, cut it open, 'n Look for metal,......
