I have a 4.3 litre GL Volvo Penta(carbed) engine in my boat and when I first start it up it idles at about 750rpm. After driving it and I put it back into neutral the idle is at about 1100rpm and it seems to be burning rich from the smell of it. If I shut the engine off and restart it the idle is back to normal at 750rpm. Sometimes it is also hard to start when engine is warm. It seems to run well at high rpms and has good power. I suspect it may be the automatic choke not working right. Anyone have any suggestions?

If I'm not mistaken most VP chokes are electric. If it is try taking off the wires, clean them up and replace if necessary to get a good connection.

Corwin, You most likely have either the throttle being held open or dirt in the idle circuit. I'm going to lean toward the PO adjusting the idle speed too high so they didn't have to bring the motor RPMs up when motor is cold (marine carbs don't have a fast idle cam)
