engine has to be cranked over many times to start, when started it runs very well. switch it off then on as many times as you want it will start again but switch it off and leave it for half hour same problem. im thinking its the fuel, is there some kind of drain off when engine is idle, and pump has to reprime.. is this supposed to happen or do i have a faulty pump, hate to buy a new pump and its still the same.. all help is appreciated. many thanks.

Do you pump the throttle a time or two and give it some throttle when starting it cold? Carbed engines don't start at idle cold like your EFI car does.
The fact that it runs ok the rest of the day after the initial cold start makes me think your fuel system is fine. If you do give it throttle to start, then perhaps the choke is not closing.

As Don S said, maybe the choke is not closing or not working at all, have seen it several times.
